PCGS AU50 1859-C HALF EAGLE
The 1859-C is scarcer than the 1857-C and 1858-C half eagles, but easier to locate than the 1860-C. Every example of the 1859-C (as well as the 1860-C) used an improperly annealed reverse die which resulted in a lack of detail on this side. Due to this fact, the grading for this date is 90%+ based on its obverse.
In my opinion, this is a nice AU53 to AU55 coin which has been net graded by PCGS due to a scratch located on the upper obverse. The color is a handsome medium honey-gold and there is a decent amount of luster clinging to both sides of the coin.
A nice non-CAC 1859-C half eagle brought $5,400 as Stack’s Bowers 11/2024: 4027, while two other PCGS 50 coins—both CAC and ex Fairmont—sold for $4,560 (11/2023) and $4,800 (8/2023).
