POPULAR PCGS/CAC EF45 1846-O HALF EAGLE
The 1846-O half eagle is somewhat more available than the 1845-O but it is considerably rarer than the1844-O. A sizable percentage of the collecotr grade examples I’ve seen over the years have been doctored at one time and pieces with natural color and choice surfaces are very scarce.
This is a crusty green-gold example with sizable amounts of dirt in the recesses on both sides. The detail is excellent for the grade while the surfaces lack any serious marks. A mint-made rim flaw over the second T in STATES is not detracting.
In their 4/2024 auction, Stacks Bowers sold a PCGS/CAC EF45 example of this date for $4,080. The present coin is not quite as nice.
CAC has approved 10 in EF45 with 17 finer.
