VERY SCARCE CAC APPROVED 1873-CC HALF EAGLE IN A POPULAR COLLECTOR GRADE
The 1873-CC trails only the far more expensive 1870-CC when it comes to overall rarity in the Carson City half eagle series. The following information taken from the 2/2025 PCGS website is instructive:
1870-CC: Total Graded EF40 and lower: 59; Total Graded EF45 and higher: 33; Total in all Grades: 92
1873-CC: Total Graded EF40 and lower: 82; Total Graded EF45 and higher: 14; Total in all Grades: 96
It doesn’t take a PhD. in Numismatics to conclude that the 1873-CC is actually quite a bit scarcer than its counterpart in EF45 and higher.
As I described this coin, I continually referred to it as a “VF35” and it still looks like a 35; and a choice one at that. Just compare it to the PCGS/CAC VF35 that fetched $15,863 as Heritage 9/2012: 4939. That coin has been cleaned and shows more wear than this 100% natural example.
This is the sole CAC approved PCGS VF 1873-CC $5 and there is nothing else that has sold in a PCGS holder with CAC until you get up to AU…and a $50k+ price tag.
I can’t imagine a nicer VF 1873-CC half eagle than this!
CAC has approved two in this grade with four finer (one in VF30, one in AU50 and two in AU55).
Ex Stack’s Bowers 11/2022: 7095 at $13,200; from the Fairmont hoard.
