NGC AU53 1858-C HALF EAGLE
The relative availability of the 1858-C half eagle means no date premium which, in turn, means that this is an ideal type coin for the collector searching for a presentable Charlotte half eagle at a price point south of $5,000. Filling this order used to be easy for me; today it is very challenging.
This is a true-to-grade example with natural reddish-gold color on both sides. It is a little bit on the chewy side and this is almost certainly why it didn’t receive approval when it was sent to CAC.
There have been only two sales via auction for the 1858-C half eagle in AU53 since the start of 2018 and both were PCGS coins; one brought $4,200 in 8/2024 while its counterpart sold for $3,700 in 4/2020.
