“EXCELLENT FOR TYPE”: A CAC APPROVED PCGS MS63+ 1893-CC $5.00
The 1890-CC is a very common issue in grades through MS62/62+. Properly graded MS63/63+ coins are not readily found, and most of the coins seen in the market at this lofty grade level are from the Fairmont Hoard.
This coin is the poster child for why the + grade is a real thing. It’s not quite an MS64 due to a little too much action in the left obverse field, but it is distinctly nicer than the typical MS63 Carson City half eagle from the 1890s.
In August 2023, Stack’s Bowers sold a CAC approved PCGS MS63+ 1890-CC half eagle for $10,200. A year later the same firm sold a PCGS/CAC MS63 for $9,000.
This piece is excellent for type, and would make an ideal CC representative for a high grade seven mint set of Liberty Head half eagles.
