CONDITIONALLY SCARCE PCGS/CAC MS62 1894-S HALF EAGLE

There are just two post-1890 San Francisco half eagles that I consider to be scarce, and these are the 1894-S and the 1895-S. With a mintage that is half as large as for the 1895-S, the 1894-S is regarded as a very scarce coin in properly graded MS62 and a rarity in higher grades. PCGS has graded four in MS63 and one in MS64, along with a miraculous NGC MS69 (ex Eliasberg/Clapp and obtained directly from the SF Mint at the time it was made).

This light green-gold example is 100% natural in appearance, with just a few too many small ticks in the fields to grade higher.

Two other PCGS/CAC MS62 1894-S half eagles have sold at auction and both are from the Fairmont hoard. One brought $4,080 as Stack’s Bowers 2021 ANA: 6113, while the other sold for $4,680 as Stack’s Bowers 2020 ANA: 1499. In March, 2021 a PCGS/CAC MS63 realized $8,700.

With just two finer at CAC (one in MS63 and the other in MS69), the scarcity of this nice MS62 becomes more readily apparent.

CAC has approved five in this grade with two finer.
