1868 $20 GRADED AU53 BY NGC WITH CAC APPROVAL

The 1868 is the single scarcest Type Two double eagles from Philadelphia. Despite a number of nice AU coins entering the market since 2020 from sources such as the Fairmont hoard, this issue remains difficult to locate in properly graded AU53 to AU55, and a CAC AU58 is scarce.

This coin appears to have been sourced in Europe but it is definitely not from Fairmont as it is less bagmarked and less dirty than the examples from this source that I have seen. A choice piece save for some mint-made dark spotting on the reverse under the right (facing) wing.

There have been four APRs for non-CAC NGC AU53 1868 double eagles since 2021, with a low of $9,500 (7/2022) and a high of $11,250 (12/2021). In June 2023, Stack’s Bowers sold a non-CAC PCGS AU53 for $9,600.

CAC has approved 9 in AU53 (including this one coin in 53+) with 14 finer.
