Due to a hoard which broke some 50+ years ago, the 1867 is available in frosty BU grades. The nicest coins from this source (and almost certainly the origin of this example) are MS62, but this date remains extremely scarce in MS63 with two 2022 APRs at close to $30k.
As with every 1867 $20 from this hoard, the luster seen on this coin is incredible and it looks more like what you might expect from a 1904 $20; not an 1867. The color—a rich wheat-gold hue—is excellent as well.
The three most recent APRs for PCGS MS62 1867 double eagles are $9,300 (12/2023), $11,400 (4/2022), and $9,600 (4/2022).
With an MS63 costing close to 3x the market for a nice MS62, don’t you think the latter is a much better value?
