SCARCE 1866-S NO MOTTO $20 IN PCGS AU53

The existence of this important Transitional issue is interesting, as news of the changeover to the new Type Two reverse die in 1866 failed to reach the San Francisco mint before 120,000 coins using the old Type One reverse were made. Today, this is the second rarest Liberty Head double eagle of any type ever made at this mint, trailing only the 1861-S Paquet reverse.

Thanks to the Fairmont Hoard, around 10 or so nice EF and AU examples of the 1866-S NM have become available to collectors. Considering how nice these are—and how scrubby most of the coins not from this source are—this has been a likely once-in-a-lifetime occurrence for advanced specialists.

This piece is very choice save for a thin vertical mark on Liberty’s face running from the ear to the truncation.

There are at least three APRs for PCGS AU53 examples of this date as far back as 2009, with the highest one at $46,000.

I purchased this at a very fair level, and I think its is a great value at my selling price.

Ex Stack’s Bowers 2024 ANA: 2174, where I purchased it for $26,400; Fairmont Hoard.
