SCARCE PCGS/CAC AU58 1855 $20

Properly graded AU58 1855 double eagles remain scarce, and this date in very scarce in MS60 to MS62. In my opinion, the current PCGS population figure of 61 coins in AU58 is significantly inflated by resubmissions.

I can’t imagine there being many comparable AU58 examples of this date in modern-day PCGS holders. Just a touch of rub keeps this attractive slider out of the 61/62 range. A fairly deep mark on the chin of Liberty does not detract, in my opinion.

In the 2022 ANA sale, Stack’s Bowers sold a PCGS/CAC 1855 double eagle for $8,700, while Heritage got $6,900 for a non-CAC PCGS AU58 in the 2024 FUN auction.

If you are even able to locate a PCGS/CAC MS61, you can expect to pay around twice the asking price for this very solid AU58.

CAC has approved 24 in this grade with 10 finer.
