SCARCE 1857-O HALF EAGLE, PCGS/CAC EF45

Only 13,000 were made and the 1857-O is a scarce date in all grades. It is numismatically significant as the final No Motto half eagle from the New Orleans mint.

This brassy yellow-gold example has some reddish color at the reverse lettering. It is well defined but has the usual small abrasions on the surfaces; on this piece none are detracting.

Only two PCGS EF45’s have sold at auction since 2011 and neither was approved by CAC. The most recent record was a strong $3,960 for a pleasing piece which sold at Stacks Bowers 8/2020: 1408.

This date is almost never offered for sale and even less often with a CAC sticker!

CAC has approved two in this grade with five finer.
