SCARCE PCGS MS62 1870 THREE DOLLAR WITH AN ELIASBERG PEDIGREE

Pedigreed to the famous Eliasberg Collection and so listed on the insert by PCGS.

The 1870 Three Dollar is scarcer than its mintage of 3,500 business strikes suggests. While available with relative ease in circulated grades, it is scarce in properly graded MS62 and it is seldom seen nicer than MS63.

This piece is housed in a much older holder and it appears to be reflective enough to qualify for today’s designation as Prooflike. Both sides show rich orange-gold color which is strongest at the obverse border and the strike is sharp. There are a few wispy hairlines which are likely the result of poor handling and not from having been cleaned or wiped with a cloth. The eye appeal is excellent.

There have been but two PCGS MS62 examples of this date sold at auction since early 2014. The most recent record is $7,750 in April 2018 while in February of that year, another sold for $7,800.

The 1870 is seldom found in grades higher than this and certainly bot with the nice appearance which this piece displays.

Ex Bowers and Ruddy 10/1982 Eliasberg Collection sale, Lot 295, where it was described as “Choice AU55 Prooflike” and sold for $2,750.
