OUTSTANDING CAC APPROVED PCGS AU50 1854-O THREE

Variety 1.

This is an extremely popular issue as it is the sole three dollar gold from New Orleans. It is a common issue in the lower AU range but most pieces so graded by the service are a complete mess with zero originality and poor strikes.

This is just about the single nicest AU50 example of this date I can recall offering. It shows excellent detail and it was struck before the dies were lapped (only 5% or so are from this state). The surfaces are very clean and the color is a pleasing deep natural green-gold which is exactly “right” for this issue.

There is but one APR for a CAC approved 1854-O three in PCGS AU50 and it was all the way back in 2010 at $4,888. A more recent record can be seen for a PCGS/CAC AU53 at $4,994 in October 2016.

I can’t imagine there are more than a small number of 1854-O threes priced at less than $5,000 which have the exceptional eye appeal that this coin has.

CAC has approved five in this grade with 30 finer.
