SCARCE 1834 CROSSLET 4 HALF EAGLE, PCGS EF40 WITH CAC APPROVAL

HM-9, R-4.

While technically a variety, the 1834 Crosslet 4 is the single scarcest Classic Head half eagle in terms of overall rarity. It is not often seen in an affordable collector grade and with good eye appeal to boot.

This is a charismatic piece for the issue with uncommonly nice natural green-gold color which is contrasted by some reddish flashes at the borders. Save for two light old parallel scratches near star three, the obverse is choice; the reverse shows a bit more wear but is also relatively free of the marks that plague this issue.

The only CAC approved PCGS EF40 1834 Crosslet 4 Classic Head half eagle to ever appear at auction sold for $3,878 as Legend 12/2017: 93. The present coin is nicer, in my opinion.

It would be extremely difficult to locate a finer example of this underappreciated issue at under $4,000.

CAC has approved four in this grade with 11 finer.
