The 1840-C is the first Liberty Head issue with the mintmark on the reverse. It is a hard issue to find in collector grades with good eye appeal and this is reflected by its small CAC population.
This is a nice original example with a typically weak strike at the centers. Both sides show marks consistent with the assigned grade and both sides are toned in a pleasing deep green-gold hue which is correct for this date.
No CAC approved PCGS EF40 has ever sold at auction. The last three APR’s for non-CAC PCGS EF40’s are: $3,360 (2/2020), $3,240 (1/2020) and $3,000 (1/2018).
The 1840-C half eagle is a hard date to locate in AU and finer grades and nice CAC approved pieces, if you can even find one, will cost you at leat double the price of this pretty example.
CAC has approved two in this grade with 11 finer.
