CAC APPROVED NGC AU53 1855-S HALF EAGLE

The 1855-S is the first collectible date for San Francisco half eagles. It is slightly scarce in the AU50 to AU55 range but very few have been approved by CAC due to the fact that the typical 1855-S is very heavily abraded.

This nice medium golden-orange and light green example is likely from an overseas source but it doesn’t have vault dirt caked on it as do some from these sources. The surfaces are much cleaner than normal and the detail is excellent. This is a really solid coin for the grade.

The only CAC approved AU53 1855-S half eagle to sell at auction was a nice PCGS piece which went strongly at $4,320 in the Stack’s Bowers 8/2020 event.

Here is an interesting Gold Rush artifact that represents excellent value at less than $3,000.

CAC has approved three in this grade with 10 finer.
