The 1857 has become easier to locate in grades through AU55 due to hoards which have entered the market. It remains somewhat scarce in properly graded AU58 and it is rare in Uncirculated.
This piece is housed in an older NGC holder and it is not from an overseas bank hoard. It shows no real wear, just some light bag friction on the high spots. The luster is nearly full and the color is a very pleasing medium orange-gold. The eye appeal is well above average for the date and grade.
Four APR’s exist for this date in CAC approved AU58 (all from PCGS) and these range from a low of $3,840 (3/2019) to a high of $4,800 (5/2018).
A really high end example and a good value for the Type One specialist.
CAC has approved 29 in this grade with 13 finer.
