AFFORDABLE NGC/CAC EF45 1851-O DOUBLE EAGLE

The 1851-O is the most common of the limited date run of Type One New Orleans double eagles issued between 1850 and 1861. It can be located in EF grades with ease but nice original examples are reasonably tough to locate.

This is a solid coin for the grade with pleasing natural sunset-gold which is deepest at the borders. The wear is even and there is nice balance between the obverse and the reverse.

The most recent APR for a CAC approved EF45 1851-O double eagle is Heritage 4/2020: 4591, graded by PCGS, which realized $3,480.

Due to hoards, these have dropped considerably in price and as recently as 2017, this coin would have sold between dealers for $5,500+.

If you haver ever wanted to own a nice New Orleans double eagle, you can’t do much better than this coin at the $3,500 price point.

CAC has approved 27 in this grade with 61 finer.
