SCARCE PCGS/CAC MS62+ 1887-S DOUBLE EAGLE
The 1887-S is the scarcest Type Three San Francisco double eagle struck after the early 1880's issues. It is not often seen above MS62 and an example in MS63--if available--is likely an overspend for most collectors.
This choice example is undipped with natural rose centers framed by orange-gold and light lime hues towards the borders. The luster is thick and frosty while the surfaces show a few light ticks, mainly in the obverse fields.
A somewhat more "ticky" PCGS/CAC MS62+ 1887-S double eagle sold cheaply as Heritage 2017 FUN: 7178 while a non-CAC MS62 graded by NGC sold for $4,935 as Lot 7174 in the exact same auction. The only PCGS MS63 to sell since 2011 realized $9,694 in January 2015.
This is an excellent value for the savvy Type Three specialist as an MS63 would cost close to three times more than this high-end MS62+.
CAC has approved 20 in MS62 (this includes at least two in MS62+) with just 2 finer (one in 63 and one in 64).
