RARE UNCIRCULATED 1885-CC DOUBLE EAGLE

The 1885-CC is one of four truly scarce Type Three double eagles from Carson City (along with the 1878-CC, 1879-CC and 1891-CC) which are almost never available in Uncirculated. There are a few dozen 1885-CC twenties known in Uncirculated with nearly all in the MS60 to MS61 range and few of these are choice for the grade.

This is a strictly "new" coin with full luster, undipped surfaces and rich natural orange-gold color. I wouldn't look twice if this coin were offered to me in an MS61 holder and with the exceptionof some marks in the left obverse field there are few grade-limiting abrasions. The eye appeal is exceptional both for the date and grade.

No PCGS MS60 1885-CC double eagles have ever sold at auction. The last PCGS MS61 sold for $37,600 as Heritage 1/15: 4392.

This coin is outstanding in every way and it is destined to grace a particularly fine set of Carson City double eagles.

From the famous Dallas Bank Collection and pedigreed as such by PCGS.
