VERY NICE PCGS/CAC AU58 1872 DOUBLE EAGLE
The 1872 is less scarce than the 1868-1871 Philadelphia issues but it is not a common date. Most of the coins in AU58 holders are abraded and have been brightened.
This choice example was recently located in Europe and it is nicely toned to a warm rich orange-gold with darker highlights. There is minimal wear and the surfaces show light marks only. There is an area of dirt caked on the first T in STATES.
The last CAC approved 1872 double eagle in PCGS AU58 sold for a strong $5,405 as Heritage 9/16: 5073.
CAC has approved 29 in this grade with 15 finer.
