Small Date variety; designated by PCGS.
Varieties of 1842 eagle exist with a Small Date and a Large Date. The former is scarcer and this variety is not often seen above the AU53 to AU55 range.
This russet toned example is a bit too abraded to grade AU55 but it is well-defined and it has the look of a "Choice AU." There is a small scuff on the reverse beneath the final S in STATES.
Only one 1842 Small Date eagle has sold at auction since 2007 and it realized $1,528 as Heritage 6/16: 5354.
