VERY HIGH-END PCGS/CAC 1906 $10 GRADED PR64CAM
Only 75 Proof eagles were produced during 1906. With an estimated survival rate of approximately 50%, this means that it is likely that not more than three dozen or so examples exist of which the present coin is among the finest; from both a technical and aesthetic standard.
This deep yellow-gold example has the deepest mirrors I can recall having seen on a Proof Liberty Head eagle of this era. There is a good amount of contrast noted between the frosted devices and the deep, watery fields, giving this coin exceptional overall eye appeal. A few light wispy lines on the obverse are noted, but I still submitted this coin to PCGS via their Reconsideration Tier for an attempt at a 64+ grade. A number of small mint-made reddish copper spots appear on the obverse and the reverse.
There has not been a single Cameo Proof 1906 eagle in either 64 or 65 grades sold at auction since the beginning of 2014 and in this 12 year period, the only finer coin to come to market was the non-CAC PR66CAM that Stack’s Bowers sold for $102,000 in 11/2024.
It is my strong opinion that when compare to similar grade Proof double eagles, the eagle series is highly undervalued.
For Cameo Proofs, CAC has approved two in this grade with five finer.
