RARE EF 1842-O HALF EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL

Variety 1.

The 1842-O is the second rarest New Orleans half eagle after the 1847-O. There are an estimated 70-80 known of this date with no more than a dozen of these grading AU50 or higher.

This fresh-to-the-market example shows a typical strike for the date with some centralized weakness seen on both sides. There is some luster seen and the surfaces are free of significant marks. The obverse has splashes of rich reddish-orange toning along the lower border and this same hue can be seen on the eagle's wings.

Only one PCGS EF45 1842-O half eagle has sold at auction since the summer of 2010 and it brought $4,994 as Heritage 4/14: 6343. No CAC approved EF45 from either service has ever crossed the auction block.

This is a truly rare coin in this grade and it represents an excellent opportunity to own an affordable yet decidedly superior 1842-O half eagle.

CAC has approved 3 in this grade with only 2 finer.
