LOW MINTAGE 1877 GOLD DOLLAR IN NGC CAC MS66

Only 3,000 business strikes (plus a mere 20 Proofs) were made, yet very high grade examples of the 1877 gold dollar exist in grades all the way up through MS68. It is likely that a few were saved by contemporary collectors or more likely by Philadelphia-area dealers.

Here is a stone-cold Gem example with nice orange-gold color over undisturbed frosty surfaces.

Surprisingly, no MS66 1877 gold dollars have sold at auction since late 2010.

Locating a finer 1877 gold dollar will not be as easy as the currently high populations figures for MS66 and MS67 might suggest.

CAC has approved four in MS66 with nine finer.
