THE ONLY CAC APPROVED PCGS AU53 1881-CC HALF EAGLE

The 1881-CC is far and away the scarcest post-1870's half eagle from the Carson City mint and this underappreciated date is comparable in overall rarity to such higher-priced issues as the 1875-CC, 1876-CC and 1877-CC half eagles.

This richly toned example shows flashy reddish-gold hues atop very lustrous surfaces. This piece shows enough detail to grade AU55 but there are some old lines in the fields which keep it at the AU53 level.

The last PCGS AU53 1881-CC half eagle to sell at auction realized $6,325 as Heritage 10/11: 4934 and it was not approved by CAC.

The 1881-CC is missing from many serious CC half eagle sets and very few nice ones have been available in the $6,000-8,000 price range.

CAC has approved this single coin in this grade with 10 finer.
