POPULAR COLLECTOR QUALITY 1871-CC $5 WITH CAC APPROVAL

This is the second half eagle made at the Carson City mint and it is among the more available issues of this denomination produced during the first decade of coinage. It becomes hard to locate in the EF45 to AU53 range and it is very rare above this.

Despite some obvious wear, this piece retains luster on both sides and the harsh PCGS net grade is mostly a result of some old contact marks on both sides. The overall detail suggests an EF40 grade and the color on the obverse border is especially pleasing. A contact mark below star two serves as ready identification.

This exact coin is the only CAC approved PCGS VF30 1871-CC half eagle to sell at auction. A non-CAC piece graded VF30 by PCGS sold for $5,170 as Heritage 9/16: 4696 and this was the first PCGS example in this grade to sell at auction since early 2011.

An affordable example of this desirable early date.

CAC has approved 2 in this grade with 13 finer.

Ex Heritage 2/11: 4471 where it sold for $4,313.
