RARE 1873-CC HALF EAGLE, PCGS VF35

The low-mintage 1873-CC is clearly one of the rarest Carson City half eagles and it is definitely the rarest CC issue of this denomination in higher grades. There are probably no more than 60-70 known with the average example grading in the VF-EF range.

This high-end VF has enough luster and body to give it strong consideration to grade EF40 but it has been penalized by PCGS for its typical soft obverse strike. The surfaces show no marks of note and after an old dipping, this piece is nicely retoning in russet and medium gold splashes, especially at the lower reverse.

Heritage 9/12: 4939, graded VF35 and approved by CAC, sold for $15,863 and it was not nearly as well detailed as the current example. Another PCGS VF35 brought $12,650 as Superior 9/07: 951.

If you collect Carson City half eagles, this is likely a date which you are missing. The opportunity to acquire a nice PCGS VF+ occurs once every few years so avail yourself of this important opportunity!
