SUPERB GEM PCGS/CAC MS66 1876-CC HALF DOLLAR, AMONG THE FINEST KNOWN

While they show similar populations at PCGS, I regard the 1876-CC half dollar as scarcer than its counterpart the 1877-CC in MS66 and finer. I am aware of three or four pieces which are properly graded at the MS66 level, with a single coin finer: a PCGS MS66+ which was obviously upgraded from a 66 holder.

Unlike the majority of Superb gems known for this date, this coin is not deeply toned. It is an original bright coin (meaning that it hasn’t been dipped) with nice overtones of pale champagne-gold. The strike is very sharp and the surfaces are extremely choice. What really stands out is this coin’s eye appeal as it has a strong cameo appearance due to the contrast between the frosted devices and the silky fields.

The record price for this date is $31,725 set by Legend 6/2019: 279, graded MS66+ by PCGS/CAC. The Battle Born coin, a PCGS/CAC M66 brought $18,400 in 2012, and the Gardner II: 98518 coin, also graded MS66 by PCGS/CAC, sold for $17,625. These three coins, plus the Old West coin offered here, represent the créme de la créme for this issue.

This is perhaps my single favorite coin in this memorable set, at least from an appearance standpoint. It must be seen in person to be fully appreciated!

CAC has approved four in this grade with none finer.
