GEM PCGS MS66 1877-CC HALF DOLLAR
WB-103. Medium CC mintmark.
Among Carson City half dollars, only this date and the 1876-CC are sometimes obtainable as Gems but the 1877-CC is, as expected, rare in MS66 and finer. The current PCGS population of eight coins in MS66 is likely inflated by resubmissions, and there is but one coin finer at this service: a splendid PCGS MS67+ which brought a strong $43,700 when it sold in January 2009.
It says a lot about this specific coin that it was the single best 1877-CC that Gene Gardner, the greatest Liberty Seated silver collector of all-time, was able to locate. Splashes of mostly reddish-orange pastels are present on either side with the deepest area of toning seen at the right reverse. The strike is very sharp with clashmarks seen in the right obverse field. The eye appeal is excellent and this is the single best example of this date I’ve offered for sale.
Including this coin, three APRs have occurred for PCGS MS66 1877-CC half dollars, with the most recent in November 2017.
Here is the perfect Carson City half dollar for a type collector who would like to own one really exceptional high-grade half dollar from this mint.
From the Old West Collection, ex Heritage 5/2015: 98493 (where it sold for $7,931), Gene Gardner Collection, Superior 7/2003: 1156 (where it sold for $8,050).
