RARE AND IMPORTANT GEM 1873-CC WITH ARROWS HALF DOLLAR: SECOND FINEST AT PCGS
WB-102.
The 1873-CC With Arrows is the only silver coin of this date/type which is remotely obtainable in higher grades. There are as many as 15-18 known in Uncirculated with most of these clustered in the MS62 to MS63 range. This issue is very scarce in MS64, and it is exceedingly rare in Gem with just two graded as such by PCGS: this lone MS65 and an MS66 which is in the exceptional collection of CC half dollars put together by Tom Bender (a customer of DWN’s, by the way…)
This very boldly impressed Gem shows a dusting of light champagne-gold with the color most notable at the date and at the lower reverse. The luster is satiny and undisturbed while the surfaces are extremely clean. There is a small, shallow reeding mark on the lower portion of Liberty’s left leg and really nothing else which merits describing. The eye appeal is quite exceptional for the date and this is a coin which clearly merits its assigned grade.
There is but a single auction record for this date/type in PCGS MS65 and it is this coin; see below for more information.
By means of comparison, the Battle Born coin graded PCGS MS64, while the Gardner coin graded PCGS/CAC MS64 but had dark, drab toning which I found unappealing. The Hansen coin grades MS63.
This is obviously a very important coin and it is one which will become a cornerstone of its new owner’s collection of Carson City half dollars.
From the Old West Collection, ex Heritage 3/2014: 30044 where it brought $42,594; Donald Bently Collection, Stellar Collection.
