DESIRABLE GEM 1875-CC HALF DOLLAR WITH CAC APPROVAL

With a mintage of more than 1 million coins, there were more half dollars made at the Carson City mint in 1875 than for the previous five years combined. This issue is reasonably easy to locate in grades through MS64, but Gems are very scarce with PCGS showing a current population of eight in MS65, and one each in MS65+ and MS66. The highest graded is the Gardner PCGS MS66+ which brought a very strong $35,250 (as an MS66) in the Heritage June 2014 auction.

This is an unquestionable Gem and it ranks as the single nicest of the four or five different PCGS MS65 1875-CC halves which I have seen or handled. The frosty surfaces show nice light champagne-gold color. It is interesting to note that a number of the higher grade examples of this date are untoned (or very lightly toned), while the 1876-CC and 1877-CC halves in this grade are usually deeply toned. A few small marks can be seen in the fields but this coin is really nice for the grade and it is well within the Condition Census for the issue.

The only CAC approved 1875-CC half dollar in PCGS MS65 to ever sell at auction was the Battle Born coin which realized $8,813 as Stack’s Bowers 2012 ANA: 11087.

This coin is nice enough for even the finest date set of Carson City halves or it would make a spectacular type coin for the collector who wants one high-quality half dollar from this facility.

CAC has approved three inn this grade with none finer.
