THE NEWMAN K-17 BECHTLER $5

K-17, R-5. Plain Edge, 140 G 20C. Rutherford.

This variety was dated August 1 1834 to signify its reduced weight in accordance with the Mint Act of 1834 which lowered the weight of Federal gold coins. There are fewer than 100 known in all grades with most well-circulated. Only a small handful show natural color.

This is among the nicest known and it is notable for its rich green-gold color with fiery reddish-gold accents. The surfaces are semi-reflective and show fewer marks than normal. This piece also lacks the mint-made issues which plague this variety and, as a result, the eye appeal is outstanding.

A non-CAC NGC MS61 recently sold for $21,600 as Heritage 1/18: 2383. A CAC approved PCGS MS62 realized $36,000 in the recent Stacks Bowers 3/18 sale.

Accompanied by an old box and a marvelous piece for the specialist or the collector of southern branch mint half eagles who wants an important association piece.

CAC has approved this one coin in MS61 with another one (MS62) finer.

Ex Heritage 11/14: 3459 ($22,325), Eric P. Newman Educational Foundation.
