PCGS/CAC/OGH 1813 HALF EAGLE, GRADED AU53

BD-2, R-4.

Housed in a very old dot matrix printed label holder and, in my opinion, at least an AU55 by today's standards.

Probably half of all the surviving half eagles dated 1813-1834 are from 1813, which makes this issue the logical choice for most type collectors. Nice AU examples are always popular and these aren't as easy to locate as one might think as most are scuffy and bright from processing.

This frosty lemon-gold piece shows light wear which is mostly confined to the high spots. The surfaces show scattered shallow ticks and are far choicer than normal. There is a small min-made grease stain through the final star on the obverse and an old scratch along the left wing which is easy to miss.

In June 2016, a "normal" CAC approved PCGS AU53 realized $9,106 and in 2014, two different non-CAC 1813 half eagles each sold for $9,400.

This is a coin with all the "bells and whistles" one could hope for and it would make an ideal type coin for the coveted Large Size Capped Head design of 1813-1829.

CAC has approved eight in this grade with 67 finer.
