PCGS/CAC AU53 1850 MOFFAT HALF EAGLE
The firm of Moffat and Company made half eagles in 1849 and 1850. These latter coins are fairly plentiful but they become scarce in the higher AU grades, especially with good color and natural surfaces.
This piece isn't as crusty as the other two Territorial half eagles in the collection but it shows ample mint frost and has nice even yellow-gold color. There is very little actual wear seen and this piece could just as easily be in an AU55 holder as PCGS seems to have confused weakness of strike (which is typical of the issue) with wear.
Only two PCGS AU53's have sold at auction since 2004. Stacks Bowers 11/13: 3481, approved by CAC, realized $7,344 and this provides a good benchmark for pricing.
CAC has approved three in this grade with eight finer.
