PCGS EF40 1848-D $5 WITH A GOLD CAC STICKER

Variety 22-P.

The 1848-D is one of the hardest Dahlonega half eagles to locate with natural color and choice surfaces. The vast majority of surviving examples have been harshly cleaned or lightened.

This very deeply toned example is among the most original 1848-D half eagles I have seen. I grade it a solid EF45 and were it not softly struck at the central obverse, it would likely grade at least AU50. A few ticks litter the left obverse field but these are well-concealed by the depth of the color.

Two CAC approved EF40 1848-D half eagles sold at auction in 2016 and these brought $2,585 (NGC) and $2,438 (PCGS). Neither, of course, had a gold sticker or were in an old holder.

CAC has  awarded gold stickers to a total of six different Dahlonega half eagles.

A really fun piece for the serious D mint collector.

CAC has approved 6 in this grade with 10 finer. This is the only 1848-D half eagle awarded a gold sticker.
