ONE OF THE MOST EXTENSIVELY TONED CHARLOTTE HALF EAGLES OF ANY DATE--AND GOLD CAC TO BOOT
Housed in an old green label holder and very close to EF by today's standards.
Toned gold is a very misunderstood area. Most deeply toned gold coins in third-party holders are of questionable origin and truly original, deep attractive toning is truly rare. I find it interesting that a $50 common date silver dollar with spectacular toning can routinely sell for $2,500 while only a handful of cutting-edge collectors will pay a strong premium for a 19th century gold coin with truly great color.
This is one of the best toned Charlotte half eagles I have seen and it was formerly owned by noted collector Robert Kanterman. The dark reddish-gold color is likely the result of storage in either a leather pouch or an old wood coin cabinet and it is equally intense on both sides.
Only two Charlotte half eagles have as of early April 2018 earned a gold sticker from CAC: this coin and a VF35 1854-C. Just 25 No Motto half eagles have been so awarded and a number of these appear in this collection.
An important coin for the advanced collector of branch mint gold or for the connoisseur who appreciates great original color.
For the date, CAC has approved 2 in VF20 with 17 finer. This is the only Gold CAC.
