RARE PCGS AU58 1857-O HALF EAGLE

Variety 1.

The 1857-O is of similar overall rarity to the 1855-O and 1856-O half eagles, but it is a tougher issue to locate in higher grades. There are just three or four known in Uncirculated, and there are very few pieces known in properly graded AU55 to AU58.

This bright yellow-gold example shows excellent detail and the surfaces lack the typical detracting marks which are seen on virtually all survivors. There is very little actual wear but the fields show enough rub to justify its assigned grade.

No PCGS AU58 1857-O half eagle has sold at auction since June 2006 when ANR offered an example which realized $7,188. The last NGC AU58 realized $6,600 as Heritage 12/17: 3249.

With just six graded AU58 by PCGS (three are graded higher and all are off the market in tightly-held collections) the opportunity to obtain a high grade 1857-O half eagle is, obviously, not an everyday occurrence for the advanced specialist.
