RARE 1861-O $20, PCGS AU55
The 1861-O is not the rarest Type One double eagle from this mint but its Civil War issuance gives it multiple levels of demand which are unseen with other dates from this facility. It is rare in AU55 and not often seen finer.
This reflective example has the detail of an AU58 or finer but it has been net graded down to its present AU55 on account of a deep planchet flaw at 3:00 on the obverse.
The last two PCGS AU55 examples of this date to sell at auction brought $66,000 in November 2017 and $67,563 in January 2017.
