CONDTIONALLY SCARCE MS62 CAC 1877-S DOUBLE EAGLE

The 1877-S is numismatically significant as the first Type Three San Francisco double eagle from the San Francisco mint. It is typically seen in the AU55 to MS61 range and most of the MS62's I have seen are not choice. In MS63, the 1877-S is a scarce and pricey issue and it is essentially unavailable finer.

This example is choice for the grade on account of its fresh appearance. It shows light, shallow abrasions over rich golden-orange and subtle greenish-gold hues.

No CAC approved MS62 1877-S double eagles have sold at auction in recent years A nice non-CAC PCGS MS62 brought $4,700 as Heritage 7/16: 4047.

If available, a PCGS MS63 1877-S would fetch $14,000-16,000 and this would be an "overbuy" for most collectors.

CAC has approved 16 in MS62 with just three finer.
