Coin Description
CONDITIONALLY SCARCE PCGS/CAC MS64 1878-S QUARTER EAGLE
The 1878-S is the second-to-last quarter eagle made at the San Francisco mint. It is common in grades up to MS63 but it is rare in properly graded MS64 and extremely rare in Gem. The only MS65 I have ever seen is the PCGS coin which sold for $11,213 in the June 2005 ANR auction.
This golden-orange borderline Gem is sharply detailed and frosty with just a few light ticks seen on the obverse. A small mark near the inside of star one appears to be mint-made as are a few neat reverse clashmarks.
Only two CAC approved PCGS MS64 1878-S quarter eagles have ever sold at auction: this coin which brought $3,525 as Heritage 4/13: 5531 and another which sold for $3,738 as Heritage 12/10: 4331.
With Gems unavailable for this date, this piece represents the best quality 1878-S for an advanced quarter eagle date set.
CAC has approved six in this grade with just one finer (MS65).
