SCARCE PCGS/CAC AU58 1840-O QUARTER EAGLE

Winter-1, Large Mintmark.

The 1840-O is a numismatically significant issue as it is the first Liberty Head quarter eagle struck at the New Orleans mint. It is available in grades through AU53 but properly graded AU55 to AU58 coins are scarce while fully Mint State 1840-O quarter eagles are very rare.

This lustrous slider shows reddish-gold and russet colors with the obverse a bit deeper in color than the reverse. There is some weakness of strike seen at the centers and this is very typical for this date.

There are two APR’s for this date in PCGS/CAC AU58 and these are for the exact same coin. These are Heritage 4/2025: 3461 at $8,400 and Stacks Bowers 2024 ANA: 5595 at $10,200. That coin was better struck than this one but this example is closer to being Mint State.

CAC has approved 11 in AU58 (this number seems inflated to me) with just three finer.
