Coin Description

SCARCE 1850-C GOLD DOLLAR

The 1850-C is the scarcest collectible Type One gold dollar from the Charlotte mint. It is not often seen above AU53 to AU55 and it is a very hard issue to find with any sort of positive eye appeal.

From the standpoint of visible luster and detail, this example is a full AU55 but it has been “netted” down to a 53 on account of two small digs on the obverse. There is a good amount of mint bloom below natural russet color and what appear to be scratches on the reverse are on the holder, not the coin.

The last PCGS AU53 1850-C gold dollar to sell at auction brought $3,220 as Heritage 9/08: 3114. No PCGS AU55 has crossed the block since the summer of 2011.

This is an issue missing in most sets and it remains undervalued, in my opinion.
