BORDERLINE GEM 1897 DOUBLE EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL

The 1897 double eagle, as with many Type Three issues of this era, is available in MS64 but it is rare and expensive in MS65. As of early February 2017, only eight examples of this date have been graded higher than MS64+ by PCGS.

This borderline Gem is frosty and were it not for some small scuffs in the right obverse field, it would receive strong consideration at the MS65 level--and a valuation of close to $20,000.

The last PCGS/CAC MS64+ 1897 double eagle to sellat auction brought $4,465 as Heritage 6/16: 5450.

For most collectors, this will be all the 1897 double eagle they will ever need.

CAC has approved 28 in MS64 (including an unknown number in 64+) with just two finer.
