CHOICE PCGS/CAC AU58 1893-CC DOUBLE EAGLE

Housed in an old green holder.

The 1893-CC is numismatically significant as the final year of issue for double eagles (and all other coins) from the famous Carson City mint. The 1893-CC appears to have been saved and it is not as scarce as its low mintage of 18,402 would suggest but it is not easy to locate properly graded AU58's.

This example was graded years ago and it appears to be very choice for the grade with clean, lustrous surfaces below deep natural russet color. Some darker highlights are the result of storage and this coin was likely sourced from Europe at one time.

Two PCGS AU58 1893-CC double eagles with CAC approval sold in Heritage's October 2016 auction. A low end example with poor eye appeal realized $10,575 while a flashy, bright piece brought a stronger $13,513.

This attractive examples, with all the "bells and whistles" a collector could want, would make a great addition to a high-quality CC double eagle set.

CAC has approved 17 in this grade with 27 finer.
