ULTRA-CRUSTY AU53 1883-CC DOUBLE EAGLE

The 1883-CC is among the more available double eagles from the fabled Carson City mint and there are hundreds extent in the lower to middle AU grades. However, only a small handful are blatantly original with dark, deep natural coloration.

This is an exceptionally original example with deep olive and orange-gold color contrasted by darker highlights and underscored by flashes of red, most prominent at the date. A few grade-limiting scuffs can be seen in the lower obverse fields but this piece has exceptional eye appeal.

The last PCGS AU53 1883-CC double eagle to sell at auction brought $5,288 as Stacks Bowers 2015 ANA: 1370; it was not approved by CAC.

This is the perfect Type Three type example for the collector seeking a single memorable piece from this Carson City design.

CAC has approved 16 in this grade with 72 finer.
