SCARCE 1856 DOUBLE EAGLE IN NGC/CAC AU58

The 1856 is, along with the1855 one of my favorite "secret dates" in the Type One double eagle series. The 1856 is scarce in properly graded AU58 and most of the pieces so graded by the services are neither choice nor original.

This is a really nice coin for the grade with natural surfaces and very little in the way of wear. There are a few handling marks in the fields but nothing which is deep or detracting. Most importantly, this piece hasn't been processed and as a result it has a fresh, wholesome appearance.

A non-CAC NGC AU58 1856 double eagle sold for $7,050 as Heritage 10/15: 3602 while a crusty PCGS/CAC AU58 realized $6,463 as Heritage 7/15: 3349.

If available, a lower-end Uncirculated 1856 double eagle would cost as much as twice the asking price for this nice AU58 and there might not be much difference in quality.

CAC has approved 11 in this grade with 2 finer.
