RARE CAC APPROVED NGC AU53 1854-S $20 WITH NATURAL SURFACES
The 1854-S is numismatically significant as the first year in which the double eagle denomination was produced by the brand-new San Francisco mint. This is a confusing date as it seems somewhat available but most higher grade examples are from shipwrecks and show matte-like surfaces. Coins which are original are rare and in demand.
This piece is fresh to the market and was recently located in Europe. It shows uncharacteristically choice surfaces below deep natural orange color with darker hues on the relief details. The strike is sharp and there is a considerable amount of luster beneath. If you follow my site, you know that I love this date and this is among the niicer 1854-S double eagles I have offered.
Two non-CAC NGC AU53 1854-S double eagles were sold at auction in 2015 and they realized $14,100 (as Stacks Bowers 10/15: 82) and $14,688 (as Heritage 7/15: 3347).
You will have to wait a long time before another comparable 1854-S double eagle becomes available.
CAC has approved 2 in this grade with 10 finer.
