NICE, ORIGINAL 1852-O DOUBLE EAGLE

Along with the 1851-O, the 1852-O is one of the two most available New Orleans double eagles. It is not often seen in grades higher than AU53 to AU55. The majority of the examples in AU53 holders are excessively abraded and show little--if any- originality.

This fresh piece was recently found in Europe and it has been spared the indignities of numismatic mishandling as have so many 1852-O double eagles. I think this piece would easily have been graded AU55 were it not for a few handling marks on the obverse. It is lustrous and well-detailed with pleasing natural green-gold coloration.

An NGC AU53 1852-O sold for $9,400 as Heritage 3/16: 5091. The last three APR's for PCGS AU53's (all for 2015 sales) were $7,696, $8,225 and $8,813.

This would make a great type coin for the collector who wants an above-average quality Type One New Orleans double eagle.
