RARE LOW MINTAGE 1885 QUARTER EAGLE IN PCGS/CAC MS64

The 1885 is one of three business strike quarter eagles from Philadelphia with mintages of lower than 1,000. Only 887 were struck with a few hundred known due to contemporary collectors and dealers hoarding this issue. The 1885 becomes really scarce in MS63 and it is very rare in MS64. I am aware of three or four properly graded MS64's as well as one or two in MS65.

This lovely borderline Gem example is prooflike with natural light lemon-gold color on both sides. There are a few faint marks in the left obverse field which limit the grade but this is the nicest MS64 1885 quarter eagle I have seen and it is truly high end for the grade.

The other PCGS/CAC MS64 1885 quarter eagle sold for $20,563 as Legend 12/14: 310 and, in my opinion, it was significantly less choice than the current offering.

This is the finest available quality for the date and it represents an important opportunity to own an essentially unimprovable example of a popular low mintage rarity.

CAC has approved 2 in this grade with 1 finer.
